Dear Parents,
Class 5 Farm Visit
On Monday Class 5 children visited a farm at Dundry as part of their current topic work. They had a super day and returned with many stories about the activities they had seen and taken part in.
Harvest Service
Our Harvest service on Wednesday was mainly led by Year 2 children who were able to share their knowledge from their farm visits with the rest of the school and lots of parents. The service featured some lovely drama about a boy who only ate chips (until he discovered the delights of fresh vegetables!) and we were also told about the wide variety of produce that has been grown in the school garden. As well as this we had some lovely art work on show, and the school and choir sang beautifully. Thank you to all children and parents who donated some food for the harvest display - it really looked impressive - and the after school sale of goods. The money raised at the sale will be added to the Bulb donations and £118 will be sent to the Oxfam Flood Appeal which is attempting to provide relief for the many parts of Africa, including Uganda, which have been so badly affected by the recent floods.
Bulbs
Yesterday many of the children were involved in planting around 400 spring bulbs in the grounds. This was a very pleasant activity on a beautiful Autumn day and the exercise will benefit the 'Rag Doll Disease' appeal who will also be sent £118. Of course, we shall all benefit too when the bulbs appear next Spring.
Buildings
You may be wondering whatever happened to the Building project! The good news is that during the last few weeks the school has been extensively surveyed by a number of different contractors who have been looking at gas and water supplies, drainage ducts etc etc in readiness for work to actually commence. We have been assured that the project is going to take place although we're still awaiting a firm timetable. We will hope to provide some even better news shortly after the holiday!
Communication
During the holiday next week we will be having an internal phone system fitted in each classroom as well as having an additional external telephone line to the school office. This should make it easier for parents to contact us. Can we request that messages about changes to collection arrangements for children are given to the office before 2.45pm whenever possible as the office staff circulate notes/messages etc to class teachers at around 3pm on a daily basis.
School Meals
This is a reminder that all school meals taken during Term 1 should have been paid for by now. The final date for payments is Wednesday 31st October.
When we return in Term 2 our school meals will be provided by a new contractor, Eden, and this company is promising that there will be many more fresh ingredients with more choice for the children. The new menus were circulated last week and please remember that the cost of school meals rises to £1.95 from the start of Term 2.
Maths Challenge Day by Samuel Waller, Liam Millham and Prakrit Kumar.
We visited the County Cricket Ground and did some challenging puzzles including Sudoku. We learnt all about Pi and discovered that in 'Squircles' (Circles in 'Grid World'), Pi actually equals 4! We also learnt about the work of a famous Greek mathematician called Pythagoras. We made some friends! We had lots of fun! Very interesting! Lovely food!
Students of the Week
This week Oliver Chaplin-Wyatt has been chosen in Class 13 for his really mature attitude towards school work in Year 6. In Class 14, Sam Goddard has been selected following his excellent creative English homework. Well done to both boys!
Assembly Theme
Assemblies for the three days after the holiday will be on the theme of 'Special People' by way of recognising All Saints Day on 1st November.
New Term
It seems amazing to me that we're already at the end of Term 1. Please remember that the new term starts at 8.55am on Wednesday 31st October. Remember also that the clocks go back one hour when you go to bed on Saturday 27th October!
Parents' Evening
Parents are invited to have a private discussion with teachers at our Parents' Evenings on Tuesday 13th and Wednesday 14th November. Meetings at this time of year are especially important in making sure that children have settled into their new classes and are progressing at the expected rate so please do make every effort to attend. I am sure you will appreciate that these evenings are difficult to timetable and we do allow a maximum of 10 minutes for each meeting. However, if you think you need a longer time than this you are requested to approach the class teacher for a meeting time on another occasion. Please return the attached slip by 9.00am Tuesday 6th November and the slip will then be sent back to you with an appointment time.

Achievement Board for
Ellie Leather and Bethany Jones
Congratulations to Ellie and Bethany (Class 10) for passing their Science Investigator badge at Brownies!
To achieve this award the girls had to carry out a range of investigations which included:
* Growing runner beans in different conditions
* Making an acid indicator using red cabbage
* Making a musical instrument from glasses filled with different amounts of water
I am informed that this is the first time in a number of years that this badge has been awarded in their pack.
Well done Ellie and Bethany!
PS The girls were tested by our very own Dr Beard!
