Dear Parents,
Good News
I am delighted to announce that Mrs Davies gave birth to a baby girl, Evie Louise, on Wednesday this week. The baby weighed in at 8lb 5oz and I gather that mum and baby, and the rest of the family, are doing very well. Congratulations to them all.
Achievement Board
This week we are introducing an Achievement Board on the back page of the newsletter. It is very clear that we have some talented youngsters in school and we thought it would be fitting to give them some celebratory space each week. This means we are looking for small articles about the achievements that our pupils make in or out of school so that we can share their success within the whole school community. Please let me know about those achievements ? they can be to do with sport, the arts, academic, pastoral ? in fact, anything that constitutes significant achievement! Don?t hide those lights under any bushels ? let?s hear about them!
After School Clubs - The following clubs will be taking place after school next week:
Tuesday Football Club, Choir
Thursday Gym Club
Friday Rugby Futures
Year 6 Medical Screening
Parents of Year 6 children are reminded of the form that was sent home last week concerning the intention to screen the height and weight of all Year 6 pupils. Parents not wishing their child to be part of this screening service should return the slip indicating lack of consent.
Pupil Information
Thank you for returning the Pupil Data Sheets which were circulated last week. It is so important that our pupil and contact information is accurate and up to date and we have discovered lots of changes during this exercise. Please return the form as soon as you can as it also gives parental consent for school trips and for the use of photos in news articles and on the website.
Dietary Requirements ? please can parents also check this part of the sheet and amend if necessary, as the new catering contractor, Eden, will require this information to provide appropriate meals for pupils next term.
We are waiting to hear more information about what the change in catering contractors will mean and we will convey more news as we become aware of it. In the meantime, however, I have heard that meal prices will increase to £1.95 from 31st October.
Parent Volunteers
As I am sure you?ll realise we are always looking out for parent (grandparent?) volunteers who have some spare time and would be willing to help out in a variety of ways in the school.
Friday afternoons Walking to Horfield Leisure Centre
Tues/Thurs afternoons Walking to Monks Park Computer Centre
Wednesday afternoons Enrichment ? many opportunities!
Please be aware that all volunteer helpers must have current CRB clearance when helping out in school. This is a straightforward process and forms are available from Ms Green in the office.
Cake Sales
The School Association cake sales start up after school next week on Wednesday 26th September with pupils in Years 5 and 6 being invited to provide the cakes on this occasion. The School Association will also be selling good quality used school wear at the same time.
School Association Members - any parents who are interested in joining the School Association committee are invited to a social evening on Tuesday 25th September (19 Cranham Road ? 8.00pm).
Ugandan Visitors
Next week we shall be hosting two Ugandan teachers from Tropical School in Masindi. They are part of a group of 30 teachers from 15 schools in Masindi who will be in Bristol until 2nd October. They will be joining in with a variety of school activities which will include the official opening of the outdoor shelter. This event has now been moved to the end of the Tuesday morning service farewell service on the 2nd October. Please remember that in the evening of Thursday 27th September there will be a concert at Henbury School to celebrate the Bristol?Masindi Educational Partnership. Our choir will be taking part in the concert and parents are very welcome to attend the event.
Swimming
A reminder that swimming starts for Classes in Years 2 and 6 next Friday.
We would still appreciate volunteers to help with escorting children to and from the Leisure Centre during the afternoon.
Clifton High School Science Competition
Four of our Year 6 students have provided the following account of their participation in a science competition event at Clifton High School earlier this week:
When we went to the science competition we had to deal with a crime. The suspects were the cook, the gardener, the housekeeper, the chauffeur, the decorator and Sir Silverton Salts. We were split up into our schools with two six form people to help us. Then we went off to the laboratory. Sam and Teo did the fire experiment. First we had six containers full of powder; one from the scene of the crime and five more from the other suspects. We used a special spatula and then we had to use a stick from water and stick it in the powders. WE then put this into a hot flame and we had to check what colour it turned on the sheet.
While we were doing that, Lily May and Aimee tested out the ink. They had to draw a line two centimetres from the bottom and put some water in and it changed colour to match the ink that was found at the scene of the crime.
After a snack we went into a hall and a man showed us how to change wine into water, then we saw a woman who showed us how to make ice-cream in less than one minute and fifty seconds (which was a world record!) using liquid nitrogen.
Then we had a delicious lunch and made our way home.
By Lily May, Samuel, Teo and Aimee
Footnote: The group have modestly omitted to write about their final position in this science competition for 12 local schools. They finished in 4th place! Well done to the young sleuths (and scientists)!
Lateness
Following on from last week?s reminder about the importance of regular, punctual attendance I thought it might be interesting to show the number of children late each day this week:
Monday ? 8, Tuesday ? 5, Wednesday ? 13, Thursday ? 4, Friday ? 15.
I will be following up those children who are regularly late next week.
