No 27 – 4th April 2008

Dear Parents

It seems strange beginning what has been our traditional Easter break at the end of the Easter period. Nevertheless here we are reviewing Term 4 and looking forward to Term 5. There are many exciting things ahead: the new building work will begin; the year 5 will have their extended visit to Fairthorne; and the whole school is walking to Beijing to celebrate the Olympic Games,  i.e. seven times around the cycle track by each class per week!  If they start in the week of the 21st April they expect to have completed the 8287 Km by 18th July.  There will also be Sports days, open evenings, swimming gala, day trips etc.... life is never dull at Horfield and the children here certainly have the benefit of an enriched curriculum.

Class 1 & 2 Educational Visit

This week classes 1 and 2 visited Court Farm. They had a great day out watching the cows being milked, seeing and feeding the lambs, and just enjoying Spring in the country-side. They had the additional experiences of seeing a baby lamb being born, and being chased by the chickens whilst eating their packed lunches.

Polish Teachers

Our Polish colleagues also arrived on Tuesday although most of us didn’t meet them until Wednesday morning. This time the staff and Year 6 children who went to Poland were particularly thrilled to see our visitors. We had such brilliant hospitality whilst we were there so we were very keen to reciprocate. They were particularly interested in seeing teaching in Years 3 and 4 and spent time in their classrooms. During the morning they were also interviewed by Bristol Community Radio and read some traditional Polish poems and stories. In the afternoon they had a tour of the Enrichment activities and ended up by teaching the Journalist group a traditional Polish dance which was great fun! On Thursday we had an assembly at which Barbara spoke about Easter customs in Poland and the children demonstrated the games and dances they had learnt.

Cake Sale

Thank you very much to Year 3 and 4 parents - a fantastic array of cakes for sale this time, which raised £80.00

Pampered Chef

Another new event organised by our very active School Association.   Thursday 8th May at .  Tickets will be on sale next term, £2.50 which will include a cookery demonstration and food tasting.

Netball squad

The Netball squad played at home against St Bonaventures on Thursday night and although we lost it was a fast and furious game.  I must say that it has been a pleasure to work with such an enthusiastic group. I would particularly like to thank Mrs Sissons for her time and expertise.

Clubs

Existing clubs including country dancing will operate on the first week back in Term 5.

New Sports Clubs Next Term

Two new clubs will be starting next term – an Athletics Club run by Premier Sport on Tuesdays, and Cricket run by Rugby Futures on Fridays.  Details available from the office or Mr MacDonald.

End of Term service

As Father John said, it is the first time that we have ever had a real Easter service because normally we are celebrating Easter before the event due to the term dates, so the Easter Service this morning was a really special occasion for us and thoroughly enjoyed by all.

Horfield  Parish  Church – Auction of Promises & Gifts

The Parish  Church will be holding an auction of promises and gifts on Saturday 10th May, at the Church Hall.  If you would like tickets for the event, or if you have any gifts, promises or donations, please contact Anne Cox on 0117 9044862.

Henry's AGM - Tuesday 13 May at .

Henry's AGM will be held in the School on Tuesday 13th May starting at and is open to all parents and staff associated with the school. The school building proposals by the City Council threaten to see the removal of Henry's current building and the school and the Committee of Henry's are currently campaigning to be allowed to fund the construction of a new building as part of the school development.  To date the Bristol City Council has resisted this campaigning and an update on the position and discussion of how to proceed will be an agenda item at the AGM.

Sadly for Henry’s, Miss Anna Sutton relinquishes her role as Club Leader this term. She has done a huge amount to strengthen links between our two organisations, and her skill and expertise will be greatly missed. Henry’s loss is the school’s gain as Miss Sutton will be able to work more hours in school from next term!  A new leader for Henry’s will be appointed shortly.

Writing Week

As we have already said, this was a very successful event. We have canvassed the children for their views and opinions and we will publish these results as soon as possible. One of the things Mr Sutton has done this week is to give each child a note book to take home and use for writing / jottings etc. We will then encourage children to bring the book back to school sometime next term with their writing so that their class teachers can continue to promote the desirability of writing. On the other hand, if children wish to use the books for personal diaries or thoughts we will certainly respect a need for privacy.

Band

Stop press!  We are going to be able to start our own Horfield Band for parents and children at the beginning of Term 5.  This will initially be for up to ten children and any interested parents.  There will be a small weekly cost and the band will be run by Josh Stopford who is in school tonight from to meet anyone interested and talk about ideas.  To secure your place please see Miss Graham as children’s places will be allocated on a first come, first serve basis

Cosmos opera

Calling all those adults who would like to be part of the community choir which will involve helping to write, compose and perform stories of creation and the cosmos. Please come to the first rehearsal at Cotham  Secondary School on Wednesday 23rd April from .

Year 6 Students of the Week

Students of the week in Year 6 were Fahima Hasnat and Charlie Mackenzie for their good manners and clear explanations when giving a guided tour to our visitors from Poland

Assembly Theme

The new term will commence with “Happiness” – what a good theme!

ACHIEVEMENT BOARD

Well done to the Journalist Enrichment group for learning a traditional Polish dance in a short space of time and then performing in front of the whole school.   Congratulations to Christopher Ackerman for achieving his Bronze Swimming Award and to Maisie Addams Class 1 for gaining a 25m STA badge.
